GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Community members and the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce gathered Wednesday morning to discuss the future of oil shale in Western Colorado.

Oil shale industries experts discussed new technology being used for oil shale.

Shell Oil Company is one of the largest oil companies in the world and currently has a project happening on the Western Slope called the Multi-Mineral Project.

The two-phase project has already proven to work on a small scale and takes place along the Piceance Basin, North East of Grand Junction.

"Well we need to bring the baking soda to the surface and then put our heaters down the hole and bring up the oil shale," said Carolyn Tucker, business communications adviser with the U.S. Rockies.

Officials say 1.5 trillion barrels of oil remain in the Green River Basin in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado.

They say if they can unlock technology to bring up the oil shale, there will be a supply of oil to last 110 years and it will reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
