“We must not tear apart our ecological system and adapt it to our needs,” says Raphael Courdray, member of the Utah Tar Sands Resistance, a civic organization that is resisting Eesti Energia’s oil shale venture in US, writes Eesti Päevaleht.

Courdray was speaking out in Salt Lake City at a public debate in which Enefit American Oil, as Eesti Energia’s venture is known in the US, talked about its plans in greater detail.

“I sincerely hope that when ordinary people hear about these projects in more detail, they will resist them. People are being fooled and lured into support projects that fail at the end,” said Courdray, adding that the local land board should not give Enefit an exploration permit.

Others were more positive about the effect of the project. US Congressman Rob Bishop who was elected from the region where the Enefit project is located said that it is an exciting project that has the potential to create significant income for Utah and improves the US national energy security.

“This project can make Utah a important player in the energy sector,” added Cody Stewart, energy adviser to the governor of Utah Gary Herbert.

“We need such projects”, says John D. Adamson, a geologist, adding that it was time that the US gives up dependance on foreign oil.
