Jordan, China sign $2.5-bln power plant deal

Beijing, September 18 (Petra) --

Jordan and China on Wednesday inked a memorandum of understanding for the construction of an oil shale-fired 900-megawatt power plant in Jordan at an investment of $2.5 billion.

Minister of Industry and Trade, Hatem al-Halwani, signed the deal with a consortium including Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO III), HTJ Group and Al-Lajjun Oil Shale Company to build the 900-megwatt oil shale-fueled power generation station in the southern city of Karak. Under another memorandum signed today, a Chinese consortium comprising the China International Water & Electric Corporation and Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Company, will design, construct and run a wind-powered 300-megwatt power plant. The minister told Petra that both memoranda set the ground for further Chinese investments in the power generation field which remains Jordan's top priority as the Kingdom imports 97 percent of its energy needs.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Huawei Technologies, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, signed another memorandum of understanding. //Petra// AA
