As of January 2013, the Newman administration of Queensland in Australia issued a framework in which the construction and re-opening and ultimately expanding of an open cast mine for oil shale at the Stuart Deposit could commence. This is in the same framework as recent massive discoveries of tight oil (erroneously referred to as "shale oil" in much press) have taken place in Australia.
